At 2.30 a.m. 10th June 2014 our little foal was born. We named him Erik.
Six days later, he developed problems, and despite the vet trying all night to save him he passed away at 6 a.m. 17th June, just a week old.

He was a dear little chap and we are devastated, particularly because this is the second foal we've lost. Several years ago Midsummer Acorn (Mac) died at just six days old because of a perforated bladder.
The vet thinks that Erik suffered some form of trauma during birth. His palette had a hole in it and he possibly had some slight brain damage. It is also possible that his hip was not formed properly.
Because of his palette he could not suckle properly.
Early this morning milk was getting into his lungs and he deteriorated rapidly.
It was kinder to put him to sleep as there was nothing more that the vet could do to correct the abnormality.
Our grateful thanks to Jennifer at Torch Equine, Mullacott Equine Centre for trying so hard to save him.
thank you for all your good wishes, please forgive me if I don't reply.
Thank you for sharing such a precious experience. What a blessing to see a new life and how mom takes care of him.
ReplyDeletethank you - the instincts of animal mother and babies is so amazing to watch, and I am delighted to be able to share the enjoyment of our new little chap.
ReplyDeleteHe was a lovely little boy and even in such a short existence brightened so many people's lives. He is running free now and I'm sure his spirit will be back again at some time in a stronger body. I hope mom is ok - I'm sure she'll be getting extra love from you all at this time too. Lots of love to you all xxxxx
ReplyDeleteAw! So sad, God love it. I'm nursing a 2 day old goat and I'm hoping she will pull through. It's hard when we try so hard for them and lose. We can only do our best and know in the end it is not in our hands but Gods. :-) R.I.P.Little Erik.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this Helen, Sending love and hugs to you all

So sorry to hear that little Eric didn't make it in the end Helen, he was a lovely little boy. Sorry for his mum too, bless her, she must be missing him too.
ReplyDeleteR.I.P. Eric.
Lots of love to you all at this sad time. xxx
I'm so sorry to hear that Helen, he was a sweetie. Thinking of you all and the little ones Mum.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear your sad news. My thoughts are with you. Although his little life was so short, at least during that time he knew loving care. I feel sure that he had some happiness during that short week.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely thought, Jules. I too think his spirit will return in a stronger body...this one was sadly not to be. Nature can be heartbreaking in Her choices. My love to you all , so sad to have another loss. I said to Kath only the other day, breeding horses was not for the faint hearted. He was a beautiful little boy and only knew love and wonderful care...Hugs xxxxxx Aly
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone, please excuse me for not replying individually. We're still a bit in emotional shock, Erik was such a lovely little chap, a real sweetie. I spent most of yesterday trying to figure why he was taken from us - this is the second foal taken from us at 6 days old - why are we being treated so cruelly? But Jules you are so right! Thank you! It is not the spirit that has devastated us, but the little body wasn't strong enough to accommodate it - and that is just one of those things. Still hard, but at least I now understand.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss....RIP little Erik xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Solwaymeg - we have moved on, but I do admit to still having a few tears. he was such a delightful little chap.
